Between the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. Between the Iowa and Cedar. Between the Des Moines and Skunk. I've lived or worked by them all. (Except the Missouri - that one doesn't count.) And fought floods against two of them more than once.

Monday (out of) Steam
Roofing (again) this weekend reminds me of how out of shape I'm in.
Dad worked on the C, B & Q and then later with Burlington Northern.
Hey, my wife's father worked for the Q, too! He started out as a messenger boy rounding up train crews, and ran so he could save his streetcar tokens. He got on the road as a brakeman, and was a conductor on passenger trains, then freight. He retired in the 1980's. He worked out of St. Joseph, MO.
This internet tubes make the world small doesn't it?
Dad started as a switchman, then brakeman, then conductor on both freight and passenger. I got a chance to ride the California Zephyr while it was still a Burlington Route before Amtrak ruined rail travel. He was stationed out of Galesburg and Burlington and retired in '83.
It seemed like my dad knew everyone that worked between Aurora, IL and Creston, IA and I would bet he either knew your wife's father or knew someone who knew him.
Was the St Joseph originally part of the Burlington and Missouri RR?
