PETA piping up

The old saw, "I support the Second Amendment and no one wants to take your right to hunt..."

These idiots do:
PETA says the Obama administration is sending a mixed message to children about gun violence by not calling for a ban on hunting.

"I can use gas more than I can use the gun,"

The sheep lined up in Waterloo to turn in guns for gas:

Area residence[sic] wait in line to drop off unwanted guns in exchange for gas cards at a Guns for Gas event at Waterloo Fire Station No. 1 Saturday, June 11, 2011, in Waterloo, Iowa. (MATTHEW PUTNEY / Courier Photo Editor)

I'm sure it makes sense to exchange something of lesser value for something of greater value, but a 9mm Browning pistol for $100 gas card?
Tallies weren't immediately available, but the Gas For Guns event, sponsored by Jim Lind Service, ran out of cards within 40 minutes.
And this Sinclair station owner wants to have another event in the fall.

Why can't any of us hold the same thing? You think a few of us Iowa bloggers could hold a "Cash for Calibers" event and I bet we'd come out ahead on the deal?

Bible burned in Cedar Rapids, rioting ensues

The first part is true, the second would have been if this had been the Koran:

Discovered last week in a downtown parking garage in Cedar Rapids, the charred remains of a Bible sit in the stairwell to remind us of either the stupidity or the lack of morals of some in our public.

My guess is that a couple of punk kids did this as a stunt and not as a religious or political statement. Otherwise they would have picked a more open and well-traveled venue. The few visitors that actually use the stairs didn't raise the alarm of radical anti-religious acts being perpetrated in the peaceful little city of Cedar Rapids.

To my knowledge, no one called the TV stations or the local paper. It wasn't on Fox or CNN and nothing posted on Youtube. In other words: Protest Fail. (If that was their mission.)

Very few saw this (reminds me of this blog), so I ask: Why?

If not to bring attention to oneself or to one's cause, why perform such an act, especially in an obscure parking garage stairwell that lazy Americans rarely use? Was it in the hope that someone would do the work they should have by contacting KCRG, that way they can enjoy a snicker in the corner of their mother's basement in a self-congratulatory moment?

It was reported to be a "Teen Study Bible" so it wasn't much of a version anyway. They would have had more attention and howls of protest if the parking garage burned to the ground. That's America today.

If you are going to burn something in protest, take some advice from the masters:

Bring a crowd and contact the press:

That way it would produce a huge counter protest:

I will paraphrase the above sign, Only Coward[s] Burn the Bible.

Do it right next time.

Disclaimer: I didn't write this to give them attention but rather to bring another example of the contradiction between the Religion of Peace® and Christians in America. The Presbyterians didn't burn the mosque in Cedar Rapids, the Methodists burn Mohammad in effigy, and the Baptists didn't do what Baptists would do. Christians still wouldn't have had the mass "peaceful" protests even if this act had widespread publicity. Am I wrong?

Man shot was permit holder

A Webster City, IA man was shot during a traffic stop by Webster City police. Driver exited his vehicle and reportedly aim a handgun at the police Sergeant who fired in self-defense.
Jensen [the driver] had a permit to carry the gun, according to the Hamilton County sheriff's office. It was confiscated by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation. While the DCI investigates the shooting, both the police report and the footage from the camera in [Sgt.] Ely's patrol car will not be made public, according to Hughes.

WC man shot in traffic stop had pistol
With the recent changes in Iowa CCW law go into effect Jan 1, I predict the Des Moines Register making hay of this in 3... 2... 1...

Update - Des Moines Register is reporting the Jensen also had a restraining order against him. Under current law he should not be in possession of a firearm. A scheduled hearing on Monday probably would have resulted in him turning them in.

Look for Attorney General Tom Miller to make political hay in 3... 2... 1...

Iran taking the suicide bomber up a notch

They must be running out of those willing and able to give their lives for the jihad.

Calling for the Ambassador of Death

Some choice quotes from the nutty Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad:
The goal of the aircraft is to "keep the enemy paralyzed in its bases."

"The jet, as well as being an ambassador of death for the enemies of humanity, has a main message of peace and friendship."

The president championed the country's military self-sufficiency program and said it will continue "until the enemies of humanity lose hope of ever attacking the Iranian nation."

"We should reach a point when Iran would serve as a defense umbrella for all freedom-loving nations in the face of world aggressors."

"We don't want to attack anywhere — Iran will never decide to attack anywhere..."
I guess funding suicide bombers in Israel doesn't count, then?

His rhetoric would be laughable if we didn't have to take the little dictator seriously.

Hippie Tunes

Coming in a day late for yesterday's post of news around the state:
WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — A Waterloo man faces a disorderly conduct charge after he retaliated against noisy neighbors by blasting an air horn in their direction.

Carl Herold said he got tired of the "hippie tunes" constantly coming from across the street. The 62-year-old bought an air horn from an old dump truck last week, pointed it at his neighbor's house, connected it to an air compressor for power and started tooting away.
Arreste, not for the initial blasts from the air horn, but because he continued.

"If it wasn't for these meddling kids..."

Teacher arrested

MFL MarMac teacher faces alcohol, gun charges
Monona police say Richard Nance, 58, has been charged with supplying alcohol to a minor, violation of gun conveyance law, and open container. He was arrested Monday night after a joint investigation involving the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Clayton County Sheriff’s Office and Monona Police Department.

Police worked with a student to stake out a meeting at a car wash. Police witnessed Nance giving the student alcohol. Nance was arrested at the car wash.
Now the noble teacher stakes his claim to an unwary student, plying him/her with an overabundance of alcohol. After the break, we'll observe the local authorities taking this vocal instructor down. Tonight on "Teachers Gone Bad".

My guess is that there was a history and pattern of behavior with this guy.

Don't be criticizing your boss

At least on the employer's email system. The result could be a lack of a job.
Recently released emails show a pattern of insubordination, bitterness and petty backstabbing by three former employees of the Lee County Recorder's office.

County emails show insubordination
The result here was a resignation and two firings.

Courts have ruled that emails are the property of the employer and are not subject to much privacy within that organization. If the boss wants to view them, then you hand them over (within reason, of course).

I get requests like this all the time and recently we stopped a request from HR when we thought a liability issue would come up.

Always cover your back-side.

Workers caught accessing Obama's records

Nine Coralville workers accused of accessing Obama’s student loan records
The nine Iowa City-area Vangent employees accused of illegally accessing President Obama’s student loan records were all fired last year, a spokeswoman said on Thursday.

Vangent is a call center, located at 2450 Oakdale Blvd. in Coralville. handling incoming calls for various agencies, including financial aid applications for the U.S. Department of Education. The forms contain confidential financial and family information.

Federal authorities have not said why the nine sought access to the president’s student loan records or if the information was used in any way.
The article goes on to list the voter registrations of the accused (like that makes any difference.) Considering one of the prerequisites for residency in Johnson county is to be a member of the Socialist Party or near enough to it.

IT Security foiled by some employee writing down passwords to databases on a sticky-note.

Damn you 3M! It's all your fault.
