World War II veteran Glenn McDole, one of the last living survivors of the Palawan massacre, passed away Thursday.
The Des Moines Register has a good write up on this man. Please give it a read.
His story Last Man Out by Bob Wilbanks describes his escape from the Japanese at Palawan. From the Register: "McDole was one of 11 prisoners of war who escaped death in a massacre on Palawan Island in the Philippines in December 1944. About 140 soldiers were killed when the Japanese herded them into trenches, dumped gasoline on them and set them on fire."
A podcast of an interview with Mr. McDole on Jan Mickelson's radio program from WHO is here. Or download an mp3. It's in the second hour, but give Jan's whole show a listen to.
Update: the intro to the interview starts at about 38 minutes in. I was in the car listening and got the times messed up (sorry).
